About Tai Chi?
Tai Chi, Tai Chi Chuan or Taijiquan, all different ways to say the same thing. Tai Chi, pronounced Tie (as in to "tie" a knot) and Jee (as in "Jeep") literally translates into English as "supreme ultimate" and Chuan (pronounced chwan) translates as "fist" or "boxing". So Tai Chi Chuan translates into English as "Supreme Ultimate Fist".

Quite a title to live upto and probably not what most people would imagine when they see images of elderly people practicing early morning Tai Chi in Chinese parks.

It may come as a suprise to some that Tai Chi is actually a martial art and not just an exercise system. It can be practiced as a martial art, an exercise system or both.
About Chen style Tai Chi?
There are a several versions of the history and origins of Tai Chi, and we will probably never know for certain now which one, if any, are completely true.
There are five main styles of Tai Chi, of which Chen style is the original. It was created in Chenjiagou Village, Wenxian County, Henan Province, China approximately 400 years ago by the 9th generation Chen family member, General Chen Wangtin (1600-1680).
